Craftiness lately

Awhile back, I posted a picture of Macey wearing an old, old bib that my Mom made for one of our kids from a dishtowel. When I looked at the picture, I thought, "Wow, that's not very nice looking. I need to make some new bibs for me to keep here." So I got that done this week.

Here's the old one, a Christmas one, tattered and beat up. I'd say it's at least 19 years old because that's how long it's been since we've had a baby of our own around here.

Here's the new one. I also made some Easter ones for the little granddaughters.

My sister Emily has a link on her blog to a website called "One Pretty Thing." I saw these cute Easter lollipops on there, so while Joanna was here this weekend, we made these out of white chocolate. Pretty cute, if I say so myself!

I have always maintained that we have the absolute BEST children-in-law. I believe it more and more every day. Each one of them has qualities that are uniquely theirs that make them absolutely special (in good ways!)

Tracy is one of the most loving people I know. I think she would do anything to help someone else. She ponders on what she can do to be a better person and tries to do it. She is a great mom and is thoughtful about how to best take care of Afton and Logan. She truly does want the best for her family. She is happy, fun loving and friendly. People at work and at church always love her. She loves to read and that love has been translated to the kids. She is good at games and has whooped some of the competitive Scoresbys a time or two. She likes to tease, but always with love and good humor.

Shannon is also a people person. She makes friends wherever she goes. She is dedicated to the Church and has been a blessing to the Young Women she works with. Like Tracy, she is a terrific mom. She enjoys learning and excelled in college. She wants to be a good homemaker and since living here, has taken on cake decorating, canning, and expanding her cooking repertoire. She enjoys all kinds of craftiness and has made their house into a warm and happy home. When we get together, Shannon and I enjoy talking about all kinds of stuff (usually while Rene and Ben are watching sports.) Preston, besides being handsome, also gets along well with people. He is dedicated to the gospel and has a lot of self discipline. I love to see Preston interact with his parents and with his brother, Carl. He loves and honors them, and it shows. He is a peacemaker and when we get all hot and bothered about a game, he calms us all down. He is a hard worker, especially when it comes to taking care of his family. His schedule last year, when he worked from 8:30am to 10:00pm, was grueling but I never heard him complain, although I know he was relieved to be done.

All of them have had their own challenges in life. None of them are perfect and we like to tease them about some of their exploits. How about when Tracy drove her car off Squaw Peak? Or what about Shannon's run-in with VEET? Once Preston tied Pumpkin, his brother's dog, up to our deck and threw a ball for him to fetch and he pulled the railing off our deck! Don't worry; Preston helped Rene fix it.

We are blessed to be able to add another great son-in-law to our family this summer. We are so happy for Ben and Joanna. Ben is very bright and capable. He treats Joanna like a princess (and she's getting spoiled!) The last time they came to visit us, Ben got his computer out and showed us pictures of his home and family in Arizona. As he talked about them, there was a sweet tenderness in his voice that I loved. I can't wait to see what fun memories we will have that we can tease Ben about.
We have two more openings for sons-in-law. It will be exciting to see who fills those spots. Any takers?

Disclaimer: The good qualities mentioned above are only a few of many and are not comparisons!! I couldn't possibly mention every single wonderful thing!

End of an era

My infatuation with cats started early. Over the course of my childhood, we had many cats and I loved them all. After we married, we were catless for probably 12 or 15 years. But the girls wanted a kitty, so about 16 years ago, we got two kittens from a friend. One of them disappeared early on, but the second one, Splity, prospered and thrived.

After 16 or so good years, Splity died a week ago of old age. She was a good cat. She was a hunter and a fierce defender of her kittens, back when she was having kittens. She roamed our neighborhood in Mt. Vernon and the neighbors all knew and loved her. Once when we went Christmas caroling, our neighbor across the street said, "Oh, if you're looking for your cat, she's sleeping with my wife."
She wasn't much of a lap cat, although she had become more so after we lost our yellow cat in December. But I miss her, and the other cat, too. No one greets me with yowls when I come home. No one bothers me to get me to fill the cat bowl or open the door. When I'm watching TV or reading, there's no one curled up next to me, purring. We still have Scout, Janet's fish, but she's not much company. I guess I'll have to pay some visits to Tiger Kitty down in Stevens Point.

Once, when I was probably about 8 or 10 years old, one of our cat's was missing on a Sunday morning. After morning church, when I expressed my sadness to Dad, he took me into the playroom, and we knelt down together and prayed that the kitty would come home. Dad went back to church (I think it was while he was the bishop and he had probably come home for a bite to eat) and when I went outside, the cat was coming down the sidewalk from Theo Phillips house.
I'll always cherish that experience. It taught me that we can approach Heavenly Father with something that is important to us, no matter how childish, and he'll hear and answer us. In later years, I have marveled at my dad's patience. I'm sure he was busy, but he took the time to help me learn that lesson. That's just one of the ways loving cats has enriched my life.

I told the kids that when I'm an old lady and confined to home, they can get me another kitten. We travel alot, so we won't be getting another one now. I'll just have to find some surrogate cats somewhere.

Menu

The four missionaries plus one elder who is here temporarily came for dinner tonight.

The menu:

Pork Loin, marinated in Honey Teryaki marinade, then roasted
mashed potatoes (still from Rene and Andy's garden)
gravy
Jello with strawberries, blueberries and bananas
rolls
Mixed steamed vegetables (asparagus, pearl onions, corn, carrots, and peas)
Boston cream pie for dessert

Times that all by two because I made double so I could take a meal to one of my visiting teachees who had surgery today.

After cooking for a big family, it doesn't even seem like a very big deal.

Cutie Pies

I enjoyed my trip out west, despite the long drive. Being around my family always inspires me to be a better person. I enjoyed being in the Salt Lake Temple. It's very different from our normal temple experiences. And it's always great to spend a lot of time with Mom--we spent 32 hours together just driving. There's a lot of sharing of memories, ideas and experiences there. Plus I got to spend time with my girls. There's not much better than that. I also learned a few pretty profound things that I hadn't thought of before.

Anyway, here are some random pictures of the week and of the days before I left. Apologies to Brian in advance in case he doesn't enjoy being lumped into the category of "cutie pie."

At Relief Society on Sunday, I was asked to take part in the program for the RS birthday event , which is going to be entitled "Seasons of a Woman's Life." Yep, they asked me to represent "Autumn!" Since I am apparently so old and withering away, I decided that I would do what all old grandmas do--show off my grandbabies.

Macey and I spent some time together last Saturday. She enjoyed learning how to use Grandma's sippy cup. Lauren is visiting right now, with her mom and dad, and she has been friendlier to me this time around. We are buds now.
