Mardi Gras

Okay, we don't celebrate Mardi Gras or Ash Wednesday. But because I'm in the winter doldrums here, I thought I would make a Kings Cake. What is a Kings Cake? It's not really even a cake; it's more like a sweet bread. It is eaten in some countries to celebrate Epiphany, but here it's part of Mardi Gras. I had never heard of Kings Cake until we moved here, which is kind of strange. Perhaps there are more people who celebrate Lent here and that's what brought up the mention of Kings Cake. Anyway, some bakeries and grocery stores around here sell them at this time of year.

There's supposed to be a little plastic baby baked inside the cake and the person who gets it has to buy the next cake. It's just Rene and I here--the baby's kind of pointless. The cake is decorated to look like one of the hats of the Three Kings. That's why it's very colorful looking. I am very happy with the way my Kings Cake turned out. It looks exactly like it's supposed to AND it's yummy! However, because recipes on blogs are supposedly lame and boring, I won't put it on here. If you want to make your own, you'll just have to email me to get the recipe!

Kings Cake! I ate a fair amount of that while I was on my mission. I've only heard one person mention it here, which surprises me because lots have talked about Mardi Gras.

No, it tastes like cinnamon rolls with pecans. But I like panettone!

I've never heard of this cake, but if it tastes like cinnamon rolls, count me in! Of course, there's NOTHING like your Apple Pie Bars...mmmm.

When we lived in Nashville our next-door neighbor was a lady who had grown up in New Orleans. One year she brought us back a King's cake. I had never heard of it before that, but it was like a box of cracker jacks to our kids - they devoured it in about 2 minutes looking for the baby.
